Today OmniVision launched a new camera sensor for smartphones and similar devices that can snap 10 megapixel still photos while simultaneously recording 1080p HD video at 30 frames per second.
The sensor, which is called the OV10810p, features a native 16:9 aspect ratio that matches that of HD video formats and can offer users a full field of view while recoding both video and images, with no zooming effect. When operating at lower resolutions, like 2.6 or 5.3 megapixel, the camera can operate at 60 frames per second, reducing shutter lag and allowing for slow-motion photography. In the 2.6 megapixel mode the sensor will also combine pixels to increase low light sensitivity.
OmniVision says that its new sensor is currently available to device manufacturers for sampling.
