Full touch Nokia 5230 announced, 3G and GPS onboard

Nokia are obviously getting more and more serious about their touchscreen portfolio. Hot on the heels of the Nokia 5530 Xpress Music, they have announced the Nokia 5230- an entry-level touchscreen handset. The newcomer has the same dimensions as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic but looses the Wi-Fi and has only a 2 megapixel camera.

Much like the Nokia 5800, the Nokia 5230 sports a 3.2-inch resistive touchscreen with a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels, FM radio, 3.5 mm audio jack and microSD card slot. The camera has been downgraded to 2 megapixel resolution but manages the decent VGA@30fps video recording.

Nokia 5230 runs the latest Symbian S60 5th edition and is powered by the same battery as 5800 - a 1320 mAh one, which is good 320 mAh larger that that of the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. According to the manufacturer the 5230 will be capable of 33 hours of non-stop music playback.

The final noteworthy features of the the 5230 include Ovi Maps and social networking integration such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.

The available inbox colors for the Nokia 5230 are black and white for the front panel and red, pink, blue, yellow, silver and dark silver for the rear covers.

The handset will be available in Q4 this year for a recommended price of 150 euro before taxes or subsides. It will also be distributed in a Comes With Music package in certain markets, priced at 259 euro before subsides and taxes.

Nokia N900 is now officially outed and it packs some serious stuff

Well, it seem Nokia have something even more exciting to announce at the upcoming Nokia World, so they’ve decided to fire early with the N900 tablet/smartphone announcement. N900 is a continuation of Nokia Nseries tablets. This time they’ve stepped out of the ultra portable computing turf and have ventured in the territory of Nokia Communicators.

Running on the new Linux-based Maemo 5 OS, the Nokia N900 power lies in the capable multi-tasking, which should make it stand out even among the ranks of the Symbian smartphones. According to Nokia reps, however, the new Maemo device is not meant to compete with the Nokia Symbian smartphones, but instead cater for different market needs.

With Nokia N900 you’ve got around-the-clock connectivity thanks to Wi-Fi and HSPA. The N900 offers phone features as well allowing full-featured telephony.

The Nokia N900 packs a powerful ARM Cortex-A8 CPU much like the Apple iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre and Samsug Omnia HD and offers hardware graphics acceleration and 256MB RAM.

Switching between applications is simple, as all running content is constantly available through the dashboard. The panoramic homescreen can be fully personalized with favorite shortcuts, widgets and applications. We wonder however how many of those features will be available in portrait mode though, as Maemo is Tablet OS that's hardly been put to use in portrait mode before.

Interaction with the handset is available through the large 3.5-inch touchscreen display with a WVGA resolution (800 x 480 pixels) and the 3-row QWERTY keypad. The touch screen also offers a virtual on-screen keyboard and operating with a stylus is possible, though one doesn’t seem to be included with the N900 itself.

Thanks to the web browser powered by Mozilla technology, websites should look just as they do on a desktop computer. Online videos and interactive applications are not a problem as the Maemo OS has full Adobe Flash 9.4 support.

The Nokia N900 has 32GB of storage, which is expandable up to 48GB via a microSD card. Other features include a GPS receiver with Ovi Maps, an FM transmitter, a 3.5mm audio jack with TV-out function, Bluetooth and DivX/XviD video playback support.

For photography on the go, the Maemo software and the N900 come with a new tag cloud user interface that helps users tag and share photos and videos more easily. The 5 megapixel with Carl Zeiss optics is also capable of recording 16:9 video with a resolution of up to 848x480 pixels@25fps.

Sony Ericsson today announced a stylish new clam shell model named T707. The T707 have some unique light effects and gesture controls. We have seen this before, but not in one Sony Ericsson mobile phone

According to the press release, tennis star Maria Sharapova clamins that "The T707 is my ultimate new accesssory". See the photo of Maria demonstrating the usage of a T707 at the bottom of this article.

Sony Ericsson announces the T715

Today Sony Ericsson announced the T715 slider phone with a 2.2 inch display and 3.2 megapixel camera

The Sony Ericsson T715 has support for microSD memory card following the trend started by the recently announced Sony Ericsson Satio, Aino and Yari models to not use Memory Stick cards. The T715 are bringing us back to the old name strategy where consumers knowing the Sony Ericsson mobile phone range should be able to place the 715 high up in the T-series. The Sony Ericsson web site compares the phone with F305, Naite and T280 which are considered low- to mid-end models. The final retail price for T715 is currently not known.

Nokia announces the Nokia 6760 Slide

One week after AT&T annouced the Nokia Surge for the AT&T network, Nokia unvield the 6760 Slide. A similar model with slightly better specifications.

Nokia 6760 is a relatively cheap QWERTY phone model. It beats the Nokia Surge with a better camera and claimed battery performance, but sadly, both models are missing Wi-Fi. Expected price is EUR 199 which is quite reasonable considering the feature list. The 6760 is a texting machine with dedicated messaging key and full QWERTY keyboard for quick typing.

It is also interesting to notice that Nokia has a paragraph in the specifications showing the environmental features for the 6760. For example that the materials are free of PVC, the device is up to 80% recyclable, package is made of up to 25% recycled material and it is 100% recyclable.

Sony Ericsson announces Satio, Aino and Yari mobile phones

Sony Ericsson today announced three new mobile phones. Satio, Aino and Yari where Satio and Aino have touch display. Satio is the official name of the Idou announced in Barcelona earlier this year.

Gone are the usual model naming. W700, G705, S500 are now substituted with names that very well could have come from the Japanese part of the company. It could be a coincidence of course, but Aino is a Japanese mountain and Yari is the Japanese term for spear. My guess is that these three models have their origin from Japan.

Suprisingly, non of the three new models have Sony's MemoryStick for external storage. microSD is the new memory card format. The connectivity plug used for charging and headset is of the usual Sony Ericsson proprietary type. In February, Sony Ericsson was one of 17 mobile phone manufactures and operators which agreed to start using a standarised charger design. We are not there yet. What we could have hoped for was a 3.5mm plug for use with quality headsets.

Sony Ericsson today announced two versions of the new model Jalou. A generic Jalou, and one model branded with Dolce Gabbana fashion brand.

The Sony Ericsson press release highlights the small size (only 73 mm high) by promoting the Jalou as "smaller than your favourite lipstick", so this model is clearly aimed at a female audience. The co-branding thing is not new. We have seen it before with LG Prada, Sony Ericsson Z770 Ducati Edition and Sharps Ferrari phone.

Jalou Dolce Gabbana is a 24 carat gold plating but the technical spesification for the two models are similar, but buyers of the DG edition will get some extra accessories. Jalou by Dolce&Gabbana comes complete with exclusive packaging and accessories – three silky rose satin bags to either protect the phone, store the charger, or to even carry jewellery. But that's not all – it also comes with a special Dolce & Gabbana branded headset with gold accents to keep you connected in style. That is not all. Sony Ericsson today announced the C903 Cyber-shot phone

A week before the Mobile World Congress opens, and a rush of announcements will occure, Sony Ericsson announces the mid-range C903 Cyber-shot model

Sony Ericsson C903 is a Cyber-shot model which is the name of Sony Ericssons camera phone range. The C903 has a 5 megapixel camera with auto focus, Smile Shutter, Face detection, flash and Image stabilizer. C903 also has aGPS built in for geo-tagging of captured photo and Google Maps and Wayfinder Navigator included.

Face Detection will let the camera find up to three people in the frame at a time and Smile Shutter will automatically pick out beaming smiles. Snap up to nine images in quick succession using BestPic, where you pick your best and delete the rest.

Something new from Sony Ericsson is the TV-out function where it is possible to connect the C903 to a TV screen and use that for output. It does not seem like the C903 comes with a printed user manual, only a e-manual on the phone.

C903 Cyber-shot is a quad-band model and support the following networks; 850/900/1800/1900 and UMTS/HSPA 900/2100. C903 will be available in selected markets from Q2 with the colours Black, White and Red.

Today Sony Ericsson announced the latest model in the Walkman range. The W395 is a entry-level model claimed to the the most affordable Walkman slider phone to date

Even though the W395 is a entry-level model, you won't miss much in regards to music features such as Stereo speaker, album art, Equaliser, PlayNow, TrackID and Bluetooth stereo (A2DP). Expected retail price is not known, but it should be in the lower end of the price scale. The currently cheapest Sony Ericsson Walkman model W595 is available for around EUR 220. I think we could expect to see an introduction price around EUR 250 for the W395.

The affordable W395 also comes complete with dedicated control keys for managing your music, a 1GB memory card and an FM radio to keep users up to date with the latest tracks. Sony Ericsson favourite TrackID will help you find that elusive song, even if you're not sure of the name, while PlayNow provides a full range of mobile entertainment content downloadable from your handset – from unique themes and wallpapers to specially developed ring tones.

Sony Ericsson C901 Cyber-shot phone announced

The third model announced by Sony Ericsson today is the C901 Cyber-shot phone. It has a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus with Xenon flash and face detection.

The similarities with the C903 are many, as most C901 features are also found in the newly announced C903. The obvious differences are of course the form factor. C903 is a slider model, while C901 has a candy-bar form. C901 has Xenon flash for low light photography while C903 does not have light of Xenon type.

I am guessing the three entry/mid range model announcements today were done because Sony Ericsson want us to have full focus the high-end devices during the Mobile World Congress next week. Esato will of course cover the MWC highlights so watch this space

Motorola today announced three new mobile phones. Motorola MOTOSURF A3100, VA76r and W233

MOTOSURF A3100 is a 3G model with a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen running Windows Mobile 6.1. The VA76r is a dust , rain and vibration resistant model. The MOTO W233 Renew is the first mobile phone to be made from platics comprised of recycled water bottels.

The MOTOSURF A3100 is a customizable and vibrant touch tablet by Motorola. It is a 3G devices with HSDPA, HSUPA and Wi-Fi connectivity. A3100 does not have number keys as all navigation is done via the touch display. Navigate the phone by simply touching or swiping your finger across the vibrant touchscreen, or use the omni-directional trackball to access to the information you need. It will be exciting how much customization Motorola has done to the Windows Mobile interface. Somewhere down the menu structure, you probably will have to use the included stylus.
